Telangana Today and R. Vinoth presented the TVK government’s first Agriculture Budget for 2026-27 on Thursday, August 6, 2026. The budget prioritizes soil conservation, pulse and oilseed production, and the deployment of an AI-powered application to provide personalized digital services for the state’s farming community.
New Missions for Soil and Crop Productivity
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government’s inaugural agricultural budget introduces several targeted missions aimed at bolstering the state’s farm economy. Vinoth, the Tamil Nadu Soil Conservation Mission has been allocated Rs 122.51 crore. This initiative is designed to protect soil fertility and encourage sustainable farming practices across the state.
To reduce reliance on external supplies and imports, the government has earmarked Rs 203.64 crore for a mission to achieve self-sufficiency in pulses and oilseed crops. Additionally, the Tamil Nadu Millet Mission will receive Rs 63.81 crore. This millet program is framed under the theme that ancient Tamil food contributes to enduring healthy living, with the dual goal of increasing cultivation area and highlighting the nutritional benefits of traditional crops.
AI Integration and Seed Subsidies
Technology plays a central role in the 2026-27 financial strategy. Minister Vinoth announced the development of an artificial intelligence-powered application intended to deliver personalized digital information and services directly to farmers. The government has allocated Rs 2 crore for this digital initiative during the current fiscal year.
Beyond digital tools, the budget addresses physical infrastructure and quality control. The government has set aside Rs 34.72 crore for a state-led scheme focused on the production of quality paddy seeds, which includes subsidies for their distribution to farmers. These measures are intended to improve overall farm productivity, which the government describes as the backbone of the Tamil Nadu economy.
The budget proposals were finalized following extensive consultations with agricultural exporters and farmers. According to Minister Vinoth, the initiatives were framed to align with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s long-term vision for agricultural development. The Agriculture Budget was presented in the Legislative Assembly one day after the government released its Revised Budget Estimates for 2026-27.
