Dao Nguyen Elected to WAN-IFRA Supervisory and Executive Boards

Dao Nguyen has been elected to the Supervisory Board of the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) by the association’s members, according to an organizational announcement. Following her appointment to the Supervisory Board, she was subsequently elected to the WAN-IFRA Executive Board to fill an existing vacancy, bringing more than 30 years of digital media, data analytics, and product development experience to the international publishing network.

Her appointment expands the breadth of international expertise represented across WAN-IFRA’s governing bodies, which coordinate a network of 80 national association members representing more than 20,000 publications in 120 countries.

With formal representative status at the United Nations, UNESCO, and the Council of Europe, WAN-IFRA works to protect the rights of journalists and publishers operating independent media worldwide. The inclusion of digital product leaders on its boards reflects the association’s ongoing focus on helping members innovate and prosper in a digital ecosystem.

Extensive Background in Digital Media and Product Leadership

Nguyen’s career spans more than three decades across prominent digital publishing and technology institutions. Prior to her role at The New York Times, she spent over 11 years at BuzzFeed. During her tenure there, she served most recently as Publisher and Chief Product and Technology Officer, guiding product, engineering, analytics, and machine learning operations across brands including BuzzFeed, Tasty, HuffPost, and Complex. At peak periods within those organizations, she directed teams comprising up to 450 personnel distributed across eight countries.

Earlier in her professional path, Nguyen served as Chief Executive Officer of Le Monde Interactif, the publisher of lemonde.fr, and held senior product positions at Dow Jones. In addition to her executive roles, she contributes to media development governance as a member of the board of the Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF).

Industry Leadership Perspectives on Digital Transformation

WAN-IFRA Chief Executive Officer Stig Ørskov noted that Nguyen’s background bridges technical acumen with strategic publishing insights. “Dao combines deep technical expertise with an exceptional understanding of how product development, data, AI and digital advertising can support audience growth and sustainable journalism,” Ørskov stated in the organization’s announcement.

Ørskov also highlighted her current work involving digital advertising product development, which remains a core pillar for modern news publishers seeking financial stability. “Her track record of using technology and generative AI to strengthen journalism rather than replace it will also benefit WAN-IFRA’s members as they navigate this period of profound transformation,” he added.

Reflecting on her election, Nguyen emphasized the shared challenges facing publishers internationally. “Publishers everywhere are grappling with how to harness data, product and AI to serve their audiences and sustain their journalism,” Nguyen said. “I look forward to contributing to that conversation and to supporting WAN-IFRA’s members as they navigate this moment of transformation.”

Governance Structure and Organizational Mission

The organization provides technical expertise, research, and collaborative networks to help independent media enterprises adapt to shifting digital consumption habits. Through its consultative status at major international bodies, WAN-IFRA continues to advocate for press freedom and publisher sustainability on a global scale.
