The massive upgrade program, which includes advanced robotics and a new welding facility, is scheduled for complete finalization by June 2027.
Toyota South Africa has crossed a major threshold in its manufacturing overhaul, finishing more than 77% of a 10.4 billion rand ($634 million) investment program dedicated to the next-generation Hilux pickup truck. The milestone coincides with the launch of pilot production at the company’s manufacturing facility in Durban, South Africa.
Plant Upgrades and Production Targets in Durban
The extensive investment program spans multiple facility enhancements designed to modernize vehicle assembly.
The manufacturing site received 3.2 billion rand for facility updates, featuring a new logistics centre for imported parts alongside a dedicated chassis treatment and coating facility. Another 7.2 billion rand went directly toward production preparation for the new Hilux generation, covering advanced machinery, robotics, and supplier tooling.
Once the company phases out production of the existing Hilux model, the Durban facility targets an annual output of approximately 140,000 units of the new generation. Those vehicles are designated for domestic buyers as well as export markets across Europe and elsewhere in Africa.
Stricter Emissions and New Market Competition
Automakers operating in South Africa face heavy pressure from tightening European regulations, which serve as a primary export destination. Upgrading local facilities allows manufacturers to introduce cleaner vehicle technologies that meet evolving compliance requirements.
Beyond regulatory demands, the updated Hilux arrives as established brands face aggressive expansion from Chinese competitors such as GWM and Chery within the South African market. To maintain its competitive edge, the new-generation Hilux incorporates advanced safety systems and modern driver-assistance technologies.
Timeline and Future Construction Milestones
While pilot manufacturing is currently underway, the investment project remains active on multiple fronts. A third major project involving a new chassis frame welding facility incorporating advanced welding technologies is scheduled for completion in June 2027.
