Caravan Uncoupled as Flames Consume Vehicle on E134
Traffic along the E134 highway in Norway came to a complete halt following a vehicle fire near the Svandalsflotunnelen in Røldal, according to local emergency services. The incident, which involved a passenger car towing a caravan, left the primary vehicle totally destroyed by flames but resulted in no reported injuries or spreading hazards, officials said.
Before the fire intensified, the vehicle’s owner managed to uncouple the attached caravan, successfully preventing it from catching fire and preserving the towed unit, the emergency dispatch center reported. All occupants aboard the car escaped the vehicle safely prior to the escalation of the blaze, and authorities confirmed there were no reports of personal injuries.
Twelve Minutes From Alert to Active Suppression
The 110-sentralen emergency dispatch center received the initial alert at 12:05 p.m. local time. According to responders, the blaze erupted on the western side of the tunnel, approximately 100 metres from the opening. Fire crews arrived on the scene at 12:17 p.m. and immediately commenced suppression efforts, finding the car fully engulfed and heavily damaged.
Immediate Closure of Svandalsflotunnelen Blocks Trans-Mountain Route
Following the outbreak, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Vegtrafikksentralen) ordered the immediate closure of the Svandalsflotunnelen. The E134 route remains completely blocked in both directions while emergency crews complete active firefighting operations, cool the wreckage, and clear debris from the roadway.
Wreckage Removal and Pending Structural Safety Checks
Recovery vehicles and cleanup crews remain on site to remove the burned-out car and clear the highway section near Røldal.
