Spider-Man: Brand New Day Chugs Along Toward a $143M Second Weekend

The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed movie is in rare air as the eighth title overall to pull off a second weekend gross exceeding $100 million, following in the footsteps of Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, and The Avengers. It also marks the first time a Sony movie has ever cleared $100 million in its second weekend, shattering the previous studio record held by 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and its $84.5 million sophomore frame. With this performance, Spider-Man: Brand New Day claims the third-highest second frame ever at the domestic box office. Premium large format (PLF) screens and added Imax screens are currently driving 33% of the weekend’s business.

Record-Breaking Box Office Milestones and Global Ascendance

The film’s earnings push its domestic haul to $653 million through its second weekend, securing the highest 10-day gross in the history of the domestic box office. Earlier in the week on Wednesday, the blockbuster overtook Toy Story 5 to become the highest-grossing movie of 2026. While Toy Story 5 required months since June to collect $1.067 billion, the Spidey sequel rocketed to $1.155 billion in just seven days. It crossed the $1 billion threshold in a mere six days, making it the second-fastest film to reach the milestone behind Avengers: Endgame, which achieved the feat in three days.

Despite the overwhelming success of the primary holdovers, the domestic box office experienced a stark divide, with the majority of moviegoers flocking exclusively to Spider-Man and Christopher Nolan’s Greek epic The Odyssey. The latter took second place, grossing $8.8 million on its fourth Friday and pulling in a projected $30.5 million by Sunday for a domestic total expected to reach $460 million.

Newcomers Battle for Remaining Box Office Scraps

Outside of the two major powerhouse holdovers, a trio of newcomers debuted on Friday with mixed results. Universal’s rom-com Variety led the new arrivals, landing in third place with $2.8 million on Friday from 3,012 domestic screens and an expected $6 million weekend. Directed by Will Gluck and starring Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, the film follows two hopeless romantics who spark a connection on the one night of the year singles are legally allowed to have sex. The movie pulled a CinemaScore of B+ and a female audience turnout of 74%, though it faces an upcoming drop-off as the under-25 demographic heads back to school.
