Satellite Data Reveals Accelerating Global Heating

New climate data and risk modelling indicate that global heating is accelerating faster than expected. According to Johnmenadue, satellite measurements analyzed to exclude anomalies such as El Niño show the planet warming at a steady 0.48 degrees per decade since 2015. This new rate is nearly three times the measurement recorded from 1970 to 2010 at 0.18 degrees Celsius per decade, and nearly double the rate of the decade spanning 2015 to 2025 at 0.27 degrees per decade.

Scientists warn that such increases could lead to 3 degrees of average global heating by 2050. When El Niño events combine with constant global heating, temperatures could reach 4 degrees by 2050. The concept of Hothouse Earth was first predicted in 2018 by Australian climatologist Will Steffen and colleagues. Additional calculations from James Hansen and a team warned in 2023 that greenhouse gases currently in the atmosphere are sufficient at equilibrium to drive the planet up by 10 degrees.

Climate Tipping Points and Global Risks

Research highlights the vulnerability of Earth’s interconnected subsystems, which include core and regional tipping elements. Christopher Wolf, a scientist at Terrestrial Ecosystems Research Associates in the US, stated in an interview reported by en.as.com that climate model simulations suggest the recent 12-month breach indicates the long-term average temperature increase is at or near 1.5 degrees. Wolf also noted that It’s likely that global temperatures are as warm as, or warmer than, at any point in the last 125,000 years and that climate change is advancing faster than many scientists predicted.

An international collaboration published a paper warning that Earth is at greater risk of triggering climate tipping points than previously believed. William Ripple of Oregon State University, the lead author of the study, warned that the AMOC shows signs of weakening, which increases the risk of Amazon dieback and further amplifies global warming through carbon release and feedback loops.

Implications for the Paris Agreement and Economy

The accelerated warming rates render the goals of the Paris Agreement obsolete alongside actions and promises made by nations worldwide. The treaty previously set long-term goals to cap global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels. Warnings associated with extreme heating scenarios include severe socioeconomic fragmentation, loss of low-lying regions, and mass migration driven by heat and water stress.

Meanwhile, the fossil fuels sector continues to generate substantial profits amidst the overheating climate. According to Johnmenadue, Oxfam reported that the world’s six largest fossil fuel corporations expected to double second-quarter earnings to $45 billion and reach $147 billion over the full financial year.
