BBC Cymru Wales has finalized a new broadcast agreement with the Football Association of Wales to televise selected fixtures from the Cymru Premier for the next three seasons, ensuring free-to-air access for supporters across the United Kingdom through 2029.
Under the terms of the new partnership, the public service broadcaster will air a minimum of 20 live matches per campaign on BBC iPlayer, alongside extensive coverage updates hosted on BBC Sport Online. The arrangement marks a significant expansion of free-to-air domestic football coverage, bringing regional top-tier fixtures to wider digital audiences.
“This deal strengthens our commitment to provide live coverage of Welsh football, and follows our recent announcement to show all of the Uefa Wales men’s international games up until Euro 2028,” said BBC Wales head of sport Carolyn Hitt, as reported by Yahoo Sports. “We hope this will be welcome news to Welsh football fans as we continue to bring sport to free-to-air television.”
Broadcasting Schedule and Opening Fixtures
The live broadcast schedule kicks off on Saturday, August 15, with a 12:30 BST fixture featuring Barry Town United against Cardiff Met. Both clubs opened their respective league campaigns with two consecutive victories. A second broadcast follows a week later on Saturday, August 22, matching Ammanford against Connah’s Quay Nomads with an identical 12:30 BST kickoff time.
The expanded television slate arrives as Wales’ top tier—established in 1992—enters its 35th edition with a restructured format. League organizers have expanded the division from 12 to 16 clubs following the promotion of Llandudno, Airbus UK, Holywell Town, Trefelin BGC, Cambrian United, and Ammanford. To accommodate the larger fixture list, matches have predominantly shifted to Friday evenings.
Strategic Impact on Domestic Football
By utilizing digital streaming platforms alongside traditional broadcast windows, the league aims to engage both traditional match-goers and new digital viewers.
Jack Sharp, FAW head of domestic leagues, emphasized the value of the collaboration in a statement reported by Yahoo Sports: “I am delighted to welcome the BBC back to Welsh domestic football through this new three-year partnership. This agreement represents another significant step in growing the profile of the Novira Cymru Premier, enabling us to reach more supporters across Wales and the wider UK through increased free-to-air coverage.”
Sharp added that the agreement effectively doubles the league’s free live broadcast offering compared to the previous season. The strategy pairs dedicated streaming platforms like Cymru Football TV with mainstream public broadcasting to serve diverse viewing habits.
The three-year pact runs concurrently with other major rights packages secured by the broadcaster, creating an extended calendar of televised Welsh football spanning domestic leagues and international fixtures.
