Ben Jones, the actor best known for playing the resourceful mechanic Cooter Davenport in the hit television series “The Dukes of Hazzard” and who later served as a United States Congressman, died on Sunday at the age of 84, according to CNN. His wife of more than thirty years, Alma Viator, confirmed the passing in a public statement, noting that the actor suffered a fatal cardiac arrest at their home while preparing to watch a baseball game.
Jones became a television staple in the late 1970s and 1980s through his work on CBS, later transitioning into electoral politics representing the state of Georgia.
Television Stardom as Cooter Davenport
Jones rose to national prominence when he was cast as Cooter Davenport, the cheerful mechanic and loyal sidekick to cousins Bo and Luke Duke in “The Dukes of Hazzard.” The action comedy aired on CBS from 1979 to 1985, capturing massive ratings during its initial run (CNN). According to Nielsen Media Research data cited by CNN, the show’s first three seasons ranked firmly among the top ten most viewed television programs in the United States.

Alma Viator announced her husband’s passing on social media, sharing a photograph of Jones relaxing with a dog on his lap (CNN). “Ben passed from a massive heart attack,” Viator wrote, explaining that he suffered the cardiac arrest at home on Sunday while waiting to watch the Atlanta Braves play the New York Yankees (CNN). “Ben had the most amazing rich full life. He loved and was loved by so many. He will be missed,” she added (CNN).
Fellow cast members quickly shared memories and condolences following the news. Tom Wopat, who played Luke Duke, posted a tribute on Instagram featuring a photograph of the two men together on stage (CNN). “The Dukes of Hazzard lost another integral part of their cast today,” Wopat wrote, describing Jones as a loyal friend and a dedicated advocate for the entertainment community (CNN).
He frequently used the venue’s platform to honor fallen colleagues, such as Rick Hurst, who portrayed Deputy Cletus Hogg (CNN).
