World number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open due to a persistent right knee injury, though the Italian player still expects to be fully fit for the upcoming US Open later this month, according to Yahoo Sports.
The 24-year-old tennis star captured his fifth Grand Slam singles title last month by defeating Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final, but he has not competed in a match since that victory.
Main draw action for the Cincinnati tournament begins on August 13, with the championship match scheduled for August 23. While Sinner steps aside to focus on his recovery, top-tier contenders including Zverev and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic remain active in the tournament draw.
Sinner Cites Medical Consultation and Recovery Goals
“After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati,” Sinner said, as reported by Yahoo Sports.
“My right knee has been bothering me and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept I’m not ready to compete yet. I’m very disappointed not to be able to play in Cincinnati. I can’t wait to be back next year and I’m now focusing on getting ready for the US Open.”
Alcaraz Also Sidelined as US Open Approaches
The men’s draw in Cincinnati will also miss reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz. Spain’s Alcaraz won the 2025 event when Sinner was forced to retire due to illness while trailing 5-0 in the final. However, the 23-year-old world number two will not travel to Ohio to defend his crown.
According to Yahoo Sports, Alcaraz has been sidelined with a wrist injury and has not played a competitive match since the Barcelona Open in April.
The US Open in New York represents the final major championship of the tennis calendar. Main tournament play runs from August 30 through September 13, giving both Sinner and his medical team a strict window to complete rehabilitation and secure match fitness.
