Italian law enforcement and prosecutors have named businessman Valter Lavitola as the suspected mastermind behind the October 2025 car bombing targeting investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, according to statements from the carabiniers and court proceedings handled by Rome prosecutor Edoardo De Santis.

The investigation centers on an explosion that occurred on October 16, 2025, when an explosive device was detonated outside the home of Ranucci in a residential area of Pomezia, located about twenty kilometers south of Rome. The blast destroyed two vehicles belonging to the journalist but resulted in no injuries. Ranucci, renowned for his investigative reporting on the mafia, corruption, and political conflicts, serves as the anchor of the public broadcaster RAI3 weekly show “Report.” Following the incident, the Committee to Protect Journalists and government officials including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi responded to the attack, with Piantedosi raising Ranucci’s security measures to the highest level.
The Chain of Suspects and Intermediaries
According to the carabiniers and prosecutors, Lavitola is suspected of having devised the criminal plan and enlisting an intermediary, Tavares Gomes Clesio, to recruit individuals capable of procuring explosives and executing the demonstration attack outside the journalist’s villa. Investigators indicate that Lavitola and Gomes conducted a preliminary reconnaissance near Ranucci’s home in September 2025.
While Lavitola is under investigation in freedom as the alleged mastermind, a warrant has also been issued for Gomes, who traveled to Cameroon in October 2025 following the attack. The physical perpetrators of the bombing include a group of suspects from Campania—identified as Marika De Filippis, Pellegrino D’Avino, Antonio Passariello, and Saverio Mutone—who were subjected to precautionary measures and face charges including the use of an explosive device, threats, and property degradation aggravated by mafia-type methods. Investigators believe the group acted upon commission in exchange for a monetary reward of a few thousand euros.
Background and Prior Judicial History of Valter Lavitola
Valter Lavitola is a recognized figure in Italian public life, having previously been known as a close associate of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Judicial history involving Lavitola includes a 2015 case where prosecutors requested prison sentences for both Lavitola and Berlusconi on accusations of corrupting a senator. According to that prosecution case, Berlusconi allegedly purchased the vote of a senator, with Lavitola delivering the money directly to the lawmaker.
Additionally, Lavitola and Bari entrepreneur Giampaolo Tarantini faced suspicions of supplying call-girls to Berlusconi between July 2008 and April 2009, as well as extorting more than 800,000 euros from him to mislead justice regarding his actions. Lavitola previously fled to South America for several months before returning to Italy, where he was incarcerated in April 2012.

The attack on Ranucci highlights the persistent dangers faced by reporters in Italy, which holds the highest number of threatened journalists and individuals under police protection in Europe, according to data from the NGO Ossigeno per l’Informazione. Approximately twenty journalists live under round-the-clock police escorts, while roughly two hundred receive some form of security detail. Ranucci himself had been under police protection for years due to repeated death threats from organized crime groups, and stated that he had received numerous additional threats shortly before the bombing after announcing an upcoming episode of “Report” focused on fresh details concerning political and mafia corruption.
