According to reports from the Daily Mail, the released texts capture discussions between Fauci, former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky, and former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy.
The disclosures add a new layer to ongoing congressional investigations into the federal government’s pandemic response. Lawmakers have spent months examining early treatment protocols, vaccine development, and safety monitoring systems managed by agencies like the Food and Drug Administration. The newly public text messages highlight internal policy debates among top officials as they navigated public confidence, emerging data, and international advisories during a critical phase of the vaccine rollout.
Vaccine Safety Discussions Involving Pregnant Women
Among the records published by Senators Johnson and Paul is an exchange from January 25 and 26, 2021, focusing on how federal agencies should address COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant women. According to the Daily Mail, Dr. Anthony Fauci expressed concern in January 2021 that the second dose of the vaccine ‘theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester.’ At the time, federal guidance was shifting rapidly as public health authorities balanced the unknown long-term effects against the immediate risks of the virus.
During the same exchange, former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy asked Fauci and Walensky if they had seen an advisory from the World Health Organization cautioning against pregnant women taking the Moderna vaccine due to a lack of data. Murthy noted in the texts that the WHO statement was a ‘strong [one] to make’ and ‘potentially quite damaging to public confidence among pregnant women.’ Fauci responded that ‘pregnant women one must weigh the potential risks against the benefits,’ adding that ‘animal tox studies did not raise any red flags,’ as reported by the Daily Mail.

Senator Ron Johnson has requested transcribed interviews with Fauci and other Food and Drug Administration officials. Johnson alleges that senior agency officials ignored warnings that the FDA’s vaccine safety monitoring system was failing to detect potential safety signals.

The release of the text messages follows a contentious Senate hearing held last month where Fauci appeared before lawmakers.
