The announcement establishes a formal timeline for introducing electric vertical takeoff and landing, or eVTOL, aircraft within the state’s aerospace testing network. State leadership outlined the strategy during a public briefing at a research facility in Auburndale, signaling a coordinated effort between transportation regulators and private technology developers to reshape regional transit options.
Behind the initiative is a network of infrastructure investments designed to handle autonomous road vehicles and low-altitude aircraft simultaneously. As metropolitan congestion intensifies across major Sunshine State corridors, transportation planners are betting that moving portions of the commuter and logistics volume into the air and onto self-driving software platforms will ease gridlock.
SunTrax Air Facility and Advanced Air Mobility Testing
Spanning more than 313 hectares, the site originally functioned as a testing ground for connected roadway systems and highway technologies before expanding its portfolio to include aviation research.
According to state transportation officials, the facility now houses what is described as the first dedicated test track for Advanced Air Mobility in the United States. The specialized aviation track measures approximately 1.6 kilometers in length, giving manufacturers a controlled environment to evaluate aircraft prototypes under simulated urban operational scenarios.
Infrastructure at the site includes dedicated vertiports and support systems built specifically to study how urban air mobility will function in practice. Engineers can test both fully electric aircraft variants, which produce low acoustic signatures suited for densely populated neighborhoods, and hybrid models designed for extended range capabilities.
Connecting Major Urban Corridors and Emergency Uses
State transportation planners have identified several primary routes for the initial deployment of air taxi networks. Among the priority scenarios is an aerial link connecting Tampa and Orlando, two major metropolitan hubs whose shared ground route along Interstate 4 frequently experiences severe traffic congestion.
Establishing point-to-point air transit between these urban centers is intended to cut travel times significantly while offering an alternative to highway commuting. Beyond the Tampa-to-Orlando corridor, long-term plans call for building out a regional network that reaches the Space Coast, utilizing the Polk County facility as a central hub due to its proximity to major highways and its distance from heavily controlled commercial airspace.
Beyond passenger transport, developers and aviation authorities are eyeing industrial and public safety applications for eVTOL technology. Potential use cases include rapid cargo delivery within metropolitan areas, urgent medical transport for patients or essential supplies, and disaster response missions where traditional ground access is compromised.
Autonomous Road Vehicles and Commercial Deployment Challenges
