Tragedy Strikes Lake Geneva’s Bains des Pâquis
A male swimmer died on Tuesday afternoon after suffering a medical emergency in Lake Geneva. The tragedy unfolded at the Bains des Pâquis.
Despite a rapid response and extensive resuscitation efforts by lifeguards and emergency personnel, the victim could not be saved.
Lifeguards and Responders Mobilize Rapidly
The Geneva canton police confirmed that an alert was raised shortly after 16:15 following the sudden medical episode. Lifeguards stationed at the facility immediately pulled the bather from the water.
They initiated emergency care. According to blick.ch, a defibrillator was utilized and cardiac massage was administered before reinforcements arrived.
Additional support was dispatched quickly to the scene. Personnel from Sauvetage de Genève and the cantonal police arrived to assist with the rescue and resuscitation efforts.
These combined medical interventions ultimately proved unsuccessful.
Facility Access Restricted and Support Provided
Following the afternoon tragedy, authorities restricted public access to the facility. The entrance to the Bains des Pâquis was closed and swimming was prohibited until further notice.
According to blick.ch, officials did not order a full evacuation of the premises.
Witnesses, bystanders, and emergency responders were provided with psychological support services on-site.
Rarity of Fatal Incidents at the Landmark
The Bains des Pâquis is a public pier and gathering spot on the shores of Lake Geneva.
Fatal incidents at the facility are rare.
Éric Vanoncini, president of the Association des usagers des Bains des Pâquis, noted that the last fatal accident at the location occurred approximately twenty years ago.
