An atypical winter weather system struck northern Chile, bringing strong winds, unusually high temperatures, and widespread power outages that prompted authorities to suspend classes across parts of the Tarapacá region, according to regional government and meteorological reports. The severe conditions affected Iquique, Alto Hospicio, and coastal areas, disrupting daily routines and damaging minor structures.
Midnight Heatwave and Desert Gusts
According to the Dirección Meteorológica de Chile, temperatures in Iquique reached an unusual 33 °C late Tuesday night, accompanied by a relative humidity of just 24 percent. This thermal contrast coincided with intense gusts originating from the interior, which pushed warm air toward the coast, lifted dust in suspension, and created turbulent conditions throughout the urban centers.
Property Damage and Rattling Windows
The sudden weather shift brought winds approaching 60 km/h alongside intermittent drizzles. Residents reported hearing the constant rattling of windows and loose roofing materials as the gales battered buildings. Social media platforms quickly filled with user-generated footage capturing property damage, including detached advertising signs and compromised exterior facades.
Blackouts Hit Coastal Fishing Coves
The strong winds caused significant disruptions to public infrastructure and municipal services. The electric utility CGE reported power outages that impacted the entire coastal strip, leaving multiple fishing coves without electricity. In response to the hazards, the Secretaría Regional Ministerial de Educación de Tarapacá announced the suspension of classes for Wednesday across Iquique, Alto Hospicio, and the coastal littoral, including the localities of Chanavayita, San Marcos, and Pisagua.
Coordinated Emergency Response and Closures
Regional education authorities stated that the suspension prioritized the safety of students and staff following reports of wind damage, flying roofs, and power failures. The decision was coordinated alongside the Servicio Nacional de Prevención y Respuesta ante Desastres (Senapred) and the Delegación Presidencial Regional de Tarapacá. Meanwhile, education officials noted that schools in the Provincia del Tamarugal would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis depending on local conditions.
