Google has officially introduced Breathing Emergency Detection for its latest wearable lineup, rolling out a capability designed to contact emergency services automatically if a user stops breathing. According to hardware announcements detailed by Stuff, the new feature relies on a combination of built-in hardware sensors and on-device AI to monitor vital signs.

The system utilizes the watch’s photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, accelerometer, and barometer to watch for severe and sustained drops in blood oxygen levels. If the device detects an acute anomaly while the wearer remains unresponsive, it can independently place a call to emergency services and transmit the exact location of the device. Google characterizes the function as an industry first for smartwatches, positioning the tool to handle critical medical interventions that go beyond traditional heart rate notifications or fall detection alerts.

Industry observers note that consumer wearables have steadily expanded into clinical and emergency domains over recent years. While standard fall detection relies on sudden impact followed by a lack of movement, breathing monitoring addresses internal physiological crises where physical movement may still be absent or minimal.
