Rio de Janeiro is preparing to host the second edition of the Zayed Charity Run, known locally as “Run for Aid,” along Flamengo Beach on August 23, according to local organizers. The international athletic and humanitarian initiative draws thousands of professional athletes, amateur runners, and families from diverse nationalities, alongside a dedicated delegation of 50 runners traveling from the United Arab Emirates.
First launched in 2001 on the initiative of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the event was established to honor the enduring legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Over more than two decades, the annual gathering has evolved into a global symbol of generosity, cross-cultural fraternity, and humanitarian commitment, utilizing the unifying power of sports to carry these principles to communities worldwide.
The Zayed Charity Run has expanded across international borders, staging successful editions in major global cities including New York, Cairo, Miami, Beijing, Addis Ababa, and Budapest. The return of the event to Brazil cements Rio de Janeiro’s prominent role within the initiative’s growing international calendar, reinforcing its mission to support vital social and humanitarian causes across different continents.
Prizes, Registration, and Community Engagement
The 2026 Brazilian edition features a competitive prize pool exceeding 500,000 Brazilian reals distributed across various racing categories, alongside special raffles and public activities designed to engage participants of all athletic abilities. Organizers emphasize that the gathering extends far beyond traditional athletic competition, encouraging community members to unite behind a charitable cause that outlasts the finish line.
In a direct commitment to local social development, 100% of all participant registration fees will be channeled directly to the AfroReggae cultural group through an official partnership with the Criança Esperança program. This philanthropic effort operates with the backing of the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Brazil, strengthening institutional ties between the race organizers and one of the country’s most established social initiatives.
Proceeds dedicated to the project will directly fund the expansion of educational, cultural, and social inclusion programs designed to improve life prospects for children, adolescents, and young adults in underserved communities. The event receives vital backing from a consortium of prominent Emirati institutions and enterprises, including Heritage Abu Dhabi, L’Emad, Emirates airline, and Mubadala.
A Timeless Humanitarian Legacy
Retired Major General Mohammed Hilal Al Kaabi, chairman of the higher organizing committee for the Zayed Charity Run, emphasized that the event serves as an enduring tribute to the humanitarian heritage of the late Sheikh Zayed. He noted that the foundational values of giving, compassion, and unity championed by the nation’s founding father continue to resonate with and inspire communities across the globe.
“We are proud to see the race return to Brazil as part of our continuous international expansion, strengthening bonds between peoples through sports and shared humanitarian goals,” Al Kaabi stated, while extending his appreciation to local partners and host authorities for their collaborative support in fostering a culture of giving and healthy lifestyles.
Participants and community members seeking further updates or looking to register for upcoming humanitarian athletic initiatives can monitor announcements through official diplomatic channels and partner portals.
