Twitch Automatically Enrolls Creators in Amazon AI Training

The announcement followed circulating rumors and was officially confirmed by Twitch in an August announcement. According to a Twitch support page, the platform utilizes streams, video-on-demand files, clips, stream chats, highlights, and any pictures or text featured on a channel for future AI training unless the user intervenes.

During a live stream addressing the update, Twitch Chief Product Officer Mike Minton discussed the decision to enable the setting automatically. If it was opt-in, nobody would opt in, Minton said, according to Kotaku. So it’s going to be on by default.

How to Locate and Disable the AI Training Toggle

The opt-out control is located within account controls, placed near the bottom of the security page. Streamers who wish to prevent their data from being gathered must complete the following steps:

• Sign in to a Twitch account.
• Open user Settings.
• Select the Security and Privacy tab.
• Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the heading labeled “Training for Generative AI.”
• Uncheck or turn off the toggle.

Once disabled, the setting stops Amazon from using future channel content to train models designed to generate or synthesize text, audio, images, or video. However, the rule does not apply retroactively, and Twitch has not clarified whether Amazon has already trained models using historical platform material.

Scope of Data Collection and Chat Rules

The default enrollment extends beyond a creator’s own broadcast materials. According to Twitch’s FAQ, typing messages in another user’s chat means those comments can also be harvested for AI training, depending entirely on the channel owner’s specific settings. If a creator opts out of AI training but participates in a chat on a channel where the setting remains active, those remarks remain eligible for Amazon’s models.

Similarly, viewers do not possess individual controls over how their chat messages are handled when visiting other streams. The host’s preference dictates whether audience interaction data is collected.

Distinction Between Generative AI and Platform Tools

Twitch emphasizes that opting out of generative AI training does not disable all machine learning or automated features on the platform. Essential operational tools and safety systems continue to function regardless of a user’s choice.

According to Appleinsider, features such as AutoMod—which secures community chat safety—and automated caption generation will remain active. Twitch notes that these operational features process data to perform specific tasks without retaining individual user streams or clips to train generative content models.

The platform maintains that users cannot individually disable safety or operational AI systems because doing so could weaken protection across the service. The new toggle applies exclusively to generative models intended to produce new text, audio, images, or video.
