Great Britain’s sprint dominance at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham continued as Amy Hunt charged to 200m glory to claim her second gold medal of the competition. Hunt, who previously won 100m gold on Monday, reeled in rival and compatriot Dina Asher-Smith down the back straight to cross the finish line first.
Her winning time of 22.19 seconds marked a season’s best performance. With women’s and mixed 4x100m relay events remaining on the schedule, the 24-year-old remains on course to be iconic and make history as the first competitor to capture four gold medals in the same tournament.
Podium Finish and National Records in Birmingham
Ireland’s Rhasidat Adeleke delivered a stellar run to set a new national record, pipping Asher-Smith to capture the silver medal. Asher-Smith, who set a rapid early pace, ultimately settled for bronze.

Reflecting on her journey to the top of the podium, Hunt noted that after struggling in the 200m earlier this summer, she felt ready for a renewal of our vows
in the event. She backed up that pre-event pledge with a composed performance, steaming through the final 40 meters to clear her competitors and hold her arms aloft in celebration.
Asher-Smith Claims Historic Ninth European Medal
Despite missing out on the top two spots, Asher-Smith’s bronze finish marked her ninth career European medal. That milestone places her behind only the 10 medals won by Polish ex-sprinter Irena Szewinska.
Pre-race expectations pointed toward the possibility of a British podium sweep, given that Asher-Smith, Hunt, and Success Eduan held the three fastest times in Europe for the year. Eduan ultimately finished sixth in the final.
British Sprints Momentum Across the Championships
Hunt’s triumph builds upon a strong run for British athletes on the track in Birmingham. Romell Glave and Jeremiah Azu previously secured a one-two finish in the men’s 100m, while Matthew Hudson-Smith claimed victory in the 400m.
