The assessment follows a recent torture and durability test by JerryRigEverything, where the bendable smartphone survived structural stress, blade contact, and fine particulate exposure.
While the new score sits one point higher than the three out of ten rating given to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold7, the device still presents significant structural repair challenges. Industry analysts and consumers tracking high-end consumer electronics look to these teardowns to understand the long-term viability and maintenance costs of expensive foldable devices.
Inside the Galaxy Z Fold8 Teardown Findings
According to the iFixit video breakdown, replacing the primary folding screen on the Galaxy Z Fold8 remains a complex and risky procedure. During the examination, the host chipped the plastic bezels surrounding the internal panel, an accident that ultimately destroyed the underlying organic light-emitting diode (OLED) layer and rendered the entire display unit unusable.
The device carries an official IP48 water and dust resistance rating, but the teardown revealed that this protection struggles against fine particulate matter. Dust easily penetrates the mechanical hinge mechanism, exposing vital internal components to potential grit accumulation over time.
Hardware Improvements and Component Modularities
Despite the fragile nature of the flexible display, the teardown highlighted several positive engineering choices by the manufacturer. Samsung utilized standard Phillips screws throughout the internal architecture of the Galaxy Z Fold8, moving away from proprietary fastener designs that often complicate third-party repairs.
Furthermore, the internal back plate is relatively easy to pry loose, and the USB-C port utilizes a modular connection rather than being directly soldered to the main logic board. This modularity allows technicians to replace the charging port much more easily if it fails.
Battery Design and Repair Logistics
