Reducing the amount of sweet-tasting food in a diet does not automatically decrease a person’s cravings for sweetness or improve overall health markers, according to a clinical trial led by researchers at Bournemouth University in the United Kingdom. The research team divided 180 participants into three distinct dietary groups over a six-month period. One group followed a diet high in sweet-tasting foods, another consumed a low-sweetness diet, and the third maintained a moderate level of sweetness. Across all three groups, sweetness came from a diverse mix of added sugars, naturally sweet foods, and low-calorie sweeteners.
At the conclusion of the six-month trial, researchers found no meaningful differences among the groups regarding their preference for sweet foods, their body weight, or standard clinical markers linked to heart disease and diabetes. Furthermore, investigators observed that many participants naturally drifted back toward their previous eating habits once the trial constraints were lifted, illustrating the resilience of long-term dietary patterns.
These findings suggest that simply targeting the taste of sweetness in public health messaging may miss the mark. While cutting back on sweet-tasting items is an intuitive strategy for many dieters, the physiology of cravings appears largely unaffected by the mere reduction of sweet flavors.
