Chauvigny Marks Two Decades of Marionette Artistry
The festival ‘Quand on parle du loup’ celebrated its 20th edition in Chauvigny, Vienne, by focusing heavily on the expressive power of puppet and object theatre. Running from August 12 to 15, 2026, the milestone cultural gathering highlighted specialized performance arts designed to ignite the imaginations of both children and adults.
Organized by Mathilde Chabot, a professional puppeteer with the company ‘le loup qui zozote’, the event represents two decades of dedicated local cultivation. According to Chabot, the festival has worked deliberately over the past 20 years to demonstrate to audiences that puppet performance is not exclusively reserved for children.
Building Networks Across Regional Association MAANA
Recognizing local receptiveness in Chauvigny, Chabot’s company integrated into the regional association MAANA, which groups organizations working around the art of the marionette. Through this network, organizers connected with numerous performance troupes to showcase diverse theatrical work during the festival.
Chabot noted that because Chauvigny is a small town, regional outreach remains vital to proving that adult-exclusive puppet shows exist. Traditional puppets often remain closely linked in the public mind with classic figures like Guignol, creating an image barrier that organizers actively seek to overcome.
Minimalist Aesthetics and the Power of Object Theatre
Object theatre functions as an intimate performance style that engages public imagination through visual imagery, metaphor, and association of ideas, according to Julie Rossignol, a performer with the TOC company.
Rossignol noted that a single object can open the doors to the imagination, emphasizing a minimalist approach that relies on surrounding materials rather than purchasing new props. This aesthetic constraint often drives the creative imagination forward. Meanwhile, the festival stage also welcomes complementary disciplines, including contemporary dance, to awaken adult audiences to the poetic potential of figurines operating as independent characters.
A Condensed Four-Day Schedule and Spectator Reception
For its 2026 anniversary, the festival adopted a condensed four-day schedule running exclusively from August 12 to August 15, offering a higher density of daily performances compared to previous years. Spectators reported strong positive impressions of the format.
One attendee remarked that the representation works exceptionally well because objects and manipulation convey complex ideas supported by strong stage acting, effectively rendering the invisible dimensions of puppet performance visible and deeply moving.
