As anger over the Iran conflict threatens to severely damage Republican prospects in the November midterms, Vice President JD Vance remarked that maintaining affordable fuel costs is the top priority for the Trump administration. Speaking on Thursday during an interview on Fox News’s The Will Cain Show, Vance addressed ongoing criticism regarding the administration’s mixed messaging and outlined a twofold framework for the war.
According to Vance, the administration’s strategy focuses first on ensuring that Gulf countries continue to send oil and gas to the world economy to secure energy price stability for the American people. The second objective, he noted, is to ensure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon. “That’s goal number one – keep oil and gas cheap for Americans all over our country and then obviously goal number two is ensure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon,” Vance told Cain, as reported by The Independent.
Strait of Hormuz Blockade and Rising Fuel Costs
The conflict escalated following the launch of U.S. and Israel’s Operation Epic Fury strikes on Iran on February 28. In response, Tehran retaliated against those countries’ allies in the region and shut off the Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20 percent of global oil is shipped. With the U.S. Navy currently maintaining a blockade on the maritime route, tanker transit has slowed to a mere trickle, which restricts petroleum supplies and causes fuel prices at the station to surge.
Data from the AAA’s index showed the U.S. national average gas price standing at $4.07 a gallon as of Friday morning, following an all-time high for mid-August. This figure marks an increase from $3.86 a month ago and $3.16 a year ago. According to The Independent, the GOP could face negative consequences at the ballot box in November because survey respondents have continually emphasized that inflation and living costs are their principal concerns, while also indicating their belief that President Donald Trump has fallen short in tackling these issues.
Internal Administration Dynamics and Public Messaging
Prior to the outbreak of the conflict with Iran, Vance reportedly opposed entering the war, though he promised Trump his backing should he proceed, and he later spearheaded diplomatic discussions that produced a brief memorandum of understanding between both parties. More recently, Vance expressed caution during an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, saying he does not back U.S. boots on the ground in the Middle East, warning of further bloodshed and a likely humanitarian crisis.
President Trump has alternated between issuing severe, existential threats toward the Iranian government and asserting that its officials are eager to reach an agreement with him. In an interview with Axios, Trump described the administration’s current approach as “low keying it,” relying on economic pressure applied by sanctions and the fact that Iran has huge inflation and no money, rather than engaging in further strikes. On his social media platform, Truth Social, the president praised the ongoing naval operations, writing that the blockade is being called, by everyone, “a wall of steel.”
