Kate O’Connor Sets PBs in Heptathlon as Andrew Coscoran Reaches 1500m Final

Kate O’Connor opened her heptathlon campaign at the European multi-events competition in Birmingham with a series of personal bests and strong performances across the morning track and field events. Competing in a demanding international field, the Newry-born athlete established herself near the top of the standings by the close of the morning session, despite facing intense pressure from top European competitors.

O’Connor kicked off her competition in the 100m hurdles, securing fourth place with a personal best time of 13.30 seconds. Building on that momentum, she moved to the high jump event.

Admitting to feeling significant pre-competition nerves, O’Connor remarked that European multi-events are intensely competitive. After O’Connor cleared 1.86m on her third attempt to equal her personal best, both athletes attempted the 1.89m bar. Neither competitor cleared 1.89m, leaving Sułek-Schumbert leading O’Connor by a single point at the end of the morning rotation.

Track and Field Updates Across Irish Contingent

Beyond O’Connor’s heptathlon events, Irish athletes competed across multiple disciplines in Birmingham. In the men’s 1500m, Andrew Coscoran ran a tactical race in heat two, finishing fourth in a time of 3:41.86 to secure his place in the final. His teammate Cathal Doyle encountered difficulties in the first heat after taking a fall, ultimately crossing the line in 4:36.28.

Reflecting on his progression, Coscoran emphasized the importance of staying calm throughout the preliminaries to manage the pace effectively.
