Trabzon Enforces Two-Day Coastal Lockdown
Hazardous weather conditions and soaring wave heights across multiple regions of Turkey have prompted widespread marine safety measures, resulting in swimming bans and the hoisting of red flags along public beaches. According to official advisories issued by regional governorates and district offices, local authorities have closed coastal areas to protect public safety amid dangerous sea states, high waves, and strong rip currents.
The restrictions affect several provinces along the Black Sea and Marmara coasts, where municipal lifeguards and coast guard units are actively enforcing the closures. Officials have urged residents and visitors to strictly obey the warnings, noting that turbulent waters pose severe risks to swimmers.
In Trabzon, the provincial governorate announced a comprehensive two-day swimming ban covering all coastline areas for August 14 and 15, as reported by Halk TV. Authorities stressed that the measure was enacted due to persistent meteorological risks that compromise water safety across the entire provincial coastline.
Akçakoca and Kastamonu Issue Emergency Bans
Further west along the Black Sea coast, Düzce’s Akçakoca district has closed all local beaches to swimming. The Akçakoca District Governorate issued an official statement noting that adverse weather and sea conditions created hazardous environments across all coastal zones. Local lifeguard teams have hoisted red flags along the shoreline, while coast guard units deployed loudspeakers to broadcast warnings and urge the public to stay out of the water.
According to the district’s official advisory, the closure aims to safeguard public life and property against dangerous currents. The statement specifically requested that citizens show high sensitivity to the restrictions and comply fully with instructions from safety personnel.
In Kastamonu, severe storms forced officials to restrict beach access in the Abana and Cide districts. The Abana and Cide district kaymakamliks reported that meteorological warnings prompted the emergency safety measures. While Cide implemented a single-day ban, the restrictions in Abana extend through the entire weekend, restricting access due to intense wave action and dangerous rip currents.
Tekirdağ Joins Marmara and Western Black Sea Crackdown
Marine conditions also affected the Marmara region, where Tekirdağ authorities prohibited swimming across three districts. The Tekirdağ Governor’s Office confirmed that elverişsiz weather conditions forced closures in Süleymanpaşa, Çorlu, and Saray. Municipal lifeguard crews changed beach flags to red, and the Coast Guard Command utilized patrol vehicles to broadcast verbal warnings along the waterfront.
Earlier August Restrictions Across Sakarya and Kocaeli
Additional closures were implemented in neighboring provinces earlier in the month. According to TRT Haber, Sakarya’s Karasu, Kocaali, and Kaynarca beaches experienced similar bans enforced by Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality lifeguards. Kocaeli’s Kandıra district likewise closed all local beaches under district governorate directives, while Zonguldak implemented brief swimming prohibitions on August 9 and 10.
Safety officials continue to monitor coastal weather patterns and have emphasized that red flag warnings indicate an absolute prohibition against entering the sea. Authorities remind the public to check local updates before planning coastal activities while adverse meteorological conditions persist.
