Netflix Shuts Down Night School Studio and Moonloot as Indie Publisher Nakana.io Closes

Nakana.io, an independent game publisher known for artistic and narrative-driven titles, has announced it will cease operations in the fall of 2026. The winding down of the studio coincides with a broader contraction in the gaming sector that includes recent internal studio closures at Netflix, which has shuttered both Night School Studio and Moonloot while trimming its internal workforce.

The closure brings an end to Nakana.io’s run as an indie publisher that specialized in meaningful, art-focused video games. Ahead of its autumn 2026 shutdown, the company has slashed prices across its entire catalog of ten games in a promotional event running through August 30. In Europe and the United Kingdom, titles are priced at €0.99 or £0.99, while pricing structures in the United States offer steep discounts for players who already own at least one title from the publisher.

Among the affected catalog are games such as Ahro, Mythic Ocean, Cosmic Top Secret, Journey of the Broken Circle, Stilstand, Soul Searching, EQQO, A Night at the Races, Arrog, Lydia, and Infini. According to the company, these titles will remain accessible to players after operations cease, with management likely transitioning directly to the individual developers behind each project.

Netflix Restructures Games Division, Closes Two Studios

At the same time, Netflix has reorganized its internal video game operations, resulting in the closure of two development teams: Night School Studio and Moonloot. Night School Studio, recognized as the developer behind the narrative adventure games Oxenfree and Oxenfree II, had recently launched Unhinged, which Netflix highlighted as one of its most successful cloud gaming debuts. Despite that launch, the streaming giant elected to close the studio alongside Moonloot, a studio founded in 2022 that was developing an Animal Crossing-inspired title without having released a completed game.

Netflix has also initiated layoffs within its internal gaming division, though the company has not publicly disclosed the exact number of employees affected by the restructuring. Corporate updates indicate that the division is shifting its strategic focus toward casual titles, children’s games, party games, and broader narrative experiences rather than expanding its footprint in standalone mid-tier studio acquisitions.

Industry Impact and Future Availability

Players looking to secure discounted titles from Nakana.io’s catalog can access the promotions on digital storefronts through August 30.
