Atlanta Falcons edge rusher Apnews has been suspended without pay for the first eight games of the season by the National Football League for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, according to an announcement by the league. The disciplinary action follows an offseason arrest in February stemming from a domestic dispute in Doral, Florida, involving his ex-girlfriend, WNBA player Rickea Jackson.

Pearce was initially charged with felonies including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding police, and resisting arrest. According to court details, Pearce chased Jackson’s vehicle in an SUV, rammed her car, attempted to block her from reaching a police department building, and subsequently fled from officers on foot before being apprehended. Jackson filed a petition for a protective order in February, writing that she feared for her life, though she later dropped the petition.
Under a legal agreement, Pearce entered a pretrial intervention program. If he maintains distance from Jackson, undergoes therapy, and stays out of legal trouble for a period of one year, the charges against him will be dismissed. Yale Sanford, an attorney representing Pearce, stated that his client has taken responsibility for his mental health and understands the ramifications of the incident.
Timeline, Preseason Status, and Reinstatement Details
Despite the suspension, Pearce remains eligible to participate in preseason activities and games until the penalty officially takes effect on August 30. He played in the ESPN preseason opener against the Denver Broncos, logging two tackles before leaving the locker room.
Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski addressed the discipline following the team’s 27-7 preseason loss, noting that the organization had been preparing for the decision. We were anticipating a suspension, so we’ve been pretty intentional about how we’ve planned for it,
Stefanski said, adding that the team trusts the established process and that Pearce has worked hard to be a supportive teammate.
Under league policy, Pearce’s access to team facilities will be restricted during the first half of his suspension period, where he is permitted inside the building solely to meet with the team clinician for mental health services. After that initial phase, he may return to attend team meetings, work with strength coaches, and consult coaches, though he remains barred from practicing. Pearce is eligible to be reinstated on November 2, following Atlanta’s Week 8 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, clearing him to return for the team’s matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid.

The eight-game absence of Pearce creates significant depth challenges for the Falcons’ defensive front. Selected at No. 26 overall in the 2025 NFL draft out of Tennessee, Pearce established himself instantly during his rookie campaign by leading Atlanta with 10.5 sacks across 17 games, earning a finish of third in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.
The pass rush unit has already suffered severe setbacks, most notably a season-ending ACL tear sustained by fellow second-year edge rusher Jalon Walker during training camp. With Pearce sidelined and Walker out for the year, the Falcons must rely on remaining defensive personnel including Christian Harris, JD Bertrand, Samson Ebukam, Kendal Daniels, Bralen Trice, and offseason addition Cameron Sample.
