Karsten Warholm secured his fourth European Championship gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 46.63 seconds despite challenging wind conditions. Competing at the championships, the athlete delivered a dominant performance. According to Vestlandsnytt, he is the first to win four gold medals in the event.
The athlete from Ulsteinvik seized control of the race from the start. German runner Emil Agyekum claimed the silver medal with a time of 47.87 seconds, while Ismail Nezir took bronze in 48.26 seconds. NRK expert Vebjørn Rodal described the performance as “fantastisk gjennomført” and called Warholm “ei ævemaskin.”
Coach Leif Olav Alnes praised the performance, stating it was “eit heilt vanvitig resultat under dei vilkåra som er her.” The triumph includes prior continental titles in Berlin in 2018, München in 2022, and Roma in 2024, alongside three World Championship golds and an Olympic gold from Tokyo.
Balancing Championship Focus and Team Culture
Warholm chooses to stay with the team during championships, in contrast to pole vaulter Armand “Mondo” Duplantis. The Swedish athlete has not stayed at the hotel with the Swedish team during the latest championships, choosing instead to stay at a separate hotel with his wife Desiré.
Reflecting on the routine of staying at the hotel, Warholm noted that staying embedded within the team fosters a sense of collective culture. He emphasized his commitment to the Norwegian team. While acknowledging that waiting out competition days in a hotel room can become repetitive, he stated it is important for him to deliver when he is there.
Family members, including his fiancée Oda Djupvik and mother Kristine Haddal, watched the victory from the stands. Djupvik noted that while contact during competition weeks is limited, the shared experience remains a part of the championship.
