دراسة جديدة تكشف فوائد غير متوقعة لأدوية التخسيس وعلاقتها بخفض خطر الإصابة بسرطان الثدي

Recent medical research presented at the 2026 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and published in JCO Oncology Practice reveals that GLP-1 medications—widely used in treating obesity and type 2 diabetes—may be associated with up to a 30% lower likelihood of developing breast cancer. The large-scale observational study evaluated health data from more than 110,000 women.

The findings point toward potential applications for weight-loss medications.

Researchers found that female patients taking GLP-1 medications exhibited a 35.1% lower risk of breast cancer diagnoses when compared against all other participants in the cohort. When matched strictly against control subjects of the same age, body weight, breast tissue density, and diabetes status, the risk reduction was 30.5%.

Mechanistically, GLP-1 medications function by mimicking a natural hormone that regulates blood sugar and appetite. Originally developed to treat diabetes, their use has expanded to include weight loss. Prior studies have hinted at an association between these medications and a lower risk of cancer or improved outcomes for survivors, though future clinical trials that provide stronger evidence have not yet been completed.

Potential Biological Drivers Behind Lower Breast Cancer Risk

Medical investigators are exploring the physiological pathways that might explain the observed reduction in breast tumor incidence. Primary factors include the efficacy of the medications in reducing weight, given that excess weight is an established risk factor for breast cancer, especially after menopause. Furthermore, researchers point to the potential of GLP-1 therapies to reduce chronic low-grade inflammation, a factor contributing to cancer development, as well as potential metabolic and genetic effects that may slow tumor growth.

The analysis did not address differences between various GLP-1 medication types, treatment duration, genetic factors, or the stage of cancer at diagnosis.

The results aim to improve prevention options, given the improved survival rates for breast cancer in recent decades, with the belief that prevention may be a logical next step.

Broader Health Impacts and Expert Caution

The analysis demonstrated marked improvements in heart health, with clear reductions in the risks of stroke, clotting disorders, high blood pressure, and heart failure, as well as a decrease in the risk of alcohol and substance abuse.

Based on data spanning three and a half years, the team found that people who took the new medications were less likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's compared to traditional treatments, and also had lower risks of schizophrenia and suicidal ideation.

He explained that participants were not randomly selected to receive GLP-1 agonists, meaning differences between those who used the drug and those who did not might be due to factors other than the medication. He noted that the data leans heavily toward older white men because it is derived from a veterans' database. He added that the study offers reassuring confirmation regarding the safety of this class of drugs, while showing clear benefits for heart health, reduced stroke risk, and improved kidney and vascular health. He added that the results revealed an encouraging decrease in the rates of certain types of cancer, such as pancreatic cancer. Importantly, despite media debate regarding the psychological effects of these drugs, the group that used them showed lower rates of schizophrenia, alcohol and substance use disorders, and suicidal ideation.
