Accrington Stanley advanced in the competition with a 3-2 victory over Oldham, marking their first win in this tournament since August 2021. The match, filled with defensive errors and attacking bursts, ultimately saw Stanley capitalize on opportunities too secure the result.
First-Half Action & Stanley’s Early Lead
Accrington started brightly, taking the lead in the 12th minute. A defensive lapse from Oldham allowed Kelsey Mooney to slot home, giving Stanley an early advantage. Just four minutes later, the lead was doubled following an own goal.Farrend Rawson headed on a free-kick, and the ball bundled in off an Oldham player, extending Accrington’s lead.
Oldham struggled to find their footing early on. Woods nearly added a third for Accrington in the 25th minute, but his shot drifted wide of the left post. Though, he wouldn’t be denied for long.

Seamus Conneely‘s cross-shot was initially flapped away by Tom Donaghy, with a helping touch from Ogle, allowing Woods to pounce with a low shot into the far right corner. Oldham did manage a response before halftime. Luke Hannant volleyed over the bar from close range, representing their first notable shot of the game.
Stanley continued to press, almost extending their lead further. Charlie Brown saw a 20-yard strike sail just over the bar, and another chance in injury time was blocked.
Second-Half Drama and Oldham’s Fightback

Accrington attempted to regain control. Woods came close to restoring the three-goal cushion in the 67th minute,but his shot also went wide of the left corner. Both teams continued to push for goals, but neither coudl find a breakthrough.
Ultimately,Accrington held on for the win,ending a drought in this competition that stretched back to a 2-1 victory at Rotherham in August 2021.It’s worth noting that their previous victory was followed by a penalty shootout defeat to Oldham in the second round of the same season.
