A remarkable display of community spirit unfolded this morning as the Municipal Library of l’Alfàs del Pi delivered a generous donation of food items too the Social volunteering Association.
This contribution stemmed from the successful “A Food item, A Book” campaign, a heartwarming initiative that, for the third consecutive year, encouraged visitors to the Cultural Center to exchange books for non-perishable food donations. It’s a lovely example of how shared resources can address critical needs within a community.
The campaign, launched in late November, aimed to support the social volunteering Association of l’Alfàs del Pi, the association responsible for managing the local Food Bank. Food banks are seeing increased demand, with a recent Feeding America report showing a 33% increase in usage since 2022.
The donation ceremony took place at the Cultural Center, with key figures in attendance including Culture Councillor Manuel Casado, Councillor for Cooperation and Volunteering Isabel Muñoz, Resident Councillor Martine Mertens, and the President of the Social Volunteering Association, Antonio Viso. All expressed their recognition for the community’s generosity and commitment to supporting those in need.
A Legacy of Literacy and Community Support
Established in November 1982, the Municipal Library of l’Alfàs del Pi initially operated from a modest space in the old Town Hall basement, housing a collection of 2,000 books. Later, on March 2, 1990, it relocated to its current location on the second floor of the Cultural Center, coinciding with the center’s inauguration.
The library’s main hall was named in honor of the distinguished journalist and poet Vicent Andrés Estellés. In April 2010,a dedicated children’s section was added nearby, named after the celebrated poet Miguel Hernández. Today, the library boasts an notable catalog of over 47,000 books, 3,800 films, and 1,800 audio files.
Did you know? Libraries are evolving beyond just book repositories, becoming vital community hubs offering resources and programs for all ages.
The l’Alfàs del Pi Town Hall emphasized the ongoing solidarity of its residents, who consistently support the Social Volunteering Association through various groups, businesses, and individual contributions, ultimately improving the lives of those facing hardship.
