The central question on viewers’ minds is: who is Andrew? The show deliberately keeps his details shrouded in secrecy, sparking playful speculation amongst the cast.
Initially, actress Sonja Mitchell considered the possibility of a significant age gap. She wondered if Andrew might be a decade older than his ex, explaining that she played a young mother to onscreen children. “Then onc we met my mother-in-law, I saeid, ‘Maybe he’s a redhead?'” Mitchell shared, highlighting the evolving nature of her character’s backstory.

What Sets “Crutch” Apart? A Unique Blend of Representation and Atmosphere
Beyond the compelling mystery surrounding Andrew, Crutch distinguishes itself through its representation and production choices. The cast emphasizes the importance of the show being one of the few Black sitcoms currently on air.
According to actor Malcolm Fowler, this representation is a key factor in the show’s appeal. “Now it’s one of the few Black shows - so that makes it stand out,” he explained. “I would say the chemistry is just very prevalent in the show. We all truly care about each other and love being around each other. So it started there.”
The show’s New York City setting also played a crucial role in creating a unique atmosphere. Fowler noted that filming on location felt different from typical procedural dramas. “When we shot it in New York, it felt like the audience was very appreciative. The energy was special,” he said. “It was one of those things where they were really excited to have a multi-cam film there after such a long time. They were really into it.”
A Deep Dive into Character Growth
For Sonja Mitchell, Crutch presented a valuable opportunity to stretch her acting muscles. She dedicated significant time to developing her character’s backstory.
Mitchell explained that her character’s relatively young age, despite having children aged nine and twelve, prompted a lot of internal exploration. “Did they get married super young and then she left Harlem?” she pondered. ”There was a lot of backstory that I feel like my character comes in wiht – and then there’s a lot of activity around what has just happened.”
she also highlighted the dynamic nature of the script, which constantly provided new facts and required her to adjust her understanding of the character’s history. This collaborative process allowed for a nuanced and authentic portrayal.
