Digital Driver’s Licenses Expand to More States in Apple Wallet
More states are embracing the future of identification. North dakota recently joined a growing list of locations supporting digital driver’s licenses and state IDs directly within your Apple Wallet, following Montana‘s addition last month.This expansion signifies a continuing shift towards convenient, digital forms of identification.
But What Does It Actually Do?
The acceptance of Apple Wallet’s digital ID varies considerably. Some states, like Montana, still advise you to carry your physical ID alongside the digital version as a precaution.
Apple highlights that you can currently use digital IDs at select Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints in participating airports, and at a limited number of businesses and venues.However, the rollout is gradual, and for now, it’s best to view this feature as a convenient supplement rather than a complete replacement for your traditional ID.
Here’s the current list of U.S. states and territories offering digital IDs in Apple Wallet:
* Arizona
* California
* Colorado
* Georgia
* Hawaii
* Iowa
* Maryland
* Montana
* New Mexico
* North Dakota
* Ohio
* Puerto Rico
It’s importent to understand the difference between the Apple Wallet solution and the standalone digital ID apps that several U.S. states have also launched. These are distinct systems,offering different levels of functionality and acceptance.
