Jared Leto‘s Method Acting for ‘Tron: Ares‘ - A Surprisingly Restrained Approach
Jared Leto is known for his deep dives into character work, often pushing the boundaries of method acting. You’ve likely heard stories – some more outlandish than others – about his dedication to roles. But his approach to playing Ares in the upcoming ‘Tron: Ares’ appears to be a surprisingly measured one, at least compared to past performances.
Leto’s commitment to fully embodying a character is well-documented. Previously, he’s been known to stay in character for extended periods, even off-set. He once reportedly pretended to be blind for a role, and allegedly sent peculiar gifts – including both live animals and used condoms - to his ‘Suicide Squad’ co-stars.
So, what did he do for an AI supersoldier? The answer is surprisingly simple: he requested those on set address him only as “Ares.”
A Name change for Immersion
According to the film’s director, Joachim Rønning, this request wasn’t disruptive or demanding. Rather, it was a way for Leto to fully inhabit the role. “I do address him as Ares when we’re filming and everybody gets a little bit up,” Rønning explained.”He’s the general walking onto set, wich is fine.”
This isn’t uncommon in the acting world, as many performers utilize similar techniques to enhance their immersion. It’s a method that clearly works for Leto,as Rønning believes his dedication is palpable in every performance.
A Director’s Outlook on Method Acting
Rønning understands Leto’s reluctance to discuss his process in detail, referring to it as his “method.” Though, he readily acknowledged the positive impact it had on the film. “Honestly for me as a director, whatever works, I think he’s one of the best actors in the world,” he stated.
Essentially, the director was happy to accommodate a request that helped Leto deliver a compelling performance. It’s a testament to the collaborative spirit of filmmaking and a director’s willingness to support an actor’s process.
A Relatively Mild Approach
Considering Leto’s history, asking to be called by his character’s name feels almost…restrained. You could say the ‘Tron: Ares’ set got off relatively easy. It highlights a potential evolution in his approach, or perhaps simply a role that resonated with a different kind of immersion.
‘Tron: Ares’ is scheduled for release on October 10th. If your a fan of Leto’s work, or simply intrigued by the world of method acting, this is a film to watch.
