expanding Expertise: Introducing Rebecca Finkel and Malaika Ross
These appointments aren’t simply about filling positions; they represent a strategic infusion of expertise and lived experience. Rebecca Finkel brings a wealth of knowledge as a clinical therapist specializing in grief education and counseling. Having dedicated 15 years to the nonprofit sector in New York City, Finkel understands the complexities of navigating challenging life transitions. Her personal experience with cancer and grief further deepens her capacity to empathize with and advocate for the Cancer Connection community.Finkel’s consistent volunteerism over the past two years – from the Bed In to Camilla’s Extravaganza – demonstrates a pre-existing dedication to the association’s mission. This commitment to emotional support for cancer patients is crucial,as studies show that addressing psychological well-being significantly improves treatment outcomes and quality of life.(National Cancer institute, 2023).
Malaika Ross, a visual artist, offers a unique perspective rooted in both scientific understanding and personal experience. Her work beautifully explores the interconnectedness of soil, flowers, and identity, informed by her background in soil microbiology. Following a breast cancer diagnosis in 2023, Ross’s artistic practice evolved to encompass the “Visibility Project” and “Novel Bodies, Novel Landscapes,” powerful series centering black female figures and exploring themes of healing, power, and transformation. This artistic exploration aligns with a growing recognition of the therapeutic benefits of creative expression in cancer recovery. Ross’s leadership in the “Shadows and Light” art workshop for breast cancer survivors, held in partnership with the Northampton Center for the Arts, and her participation in a panel discussion at Bombyx Center for Arts & Equity, highlight her dedication to fostering healing through art. A recent study published in Art Therapy (2024) demonstrated a significant reduction in anxiety and depression symptoms among cancer patients participating in art therapy programs.
