Carlos Beltrán Embraces Hall of Fame Induction, Addresses Astros Scandal
Cooperstown, NY - Newly inducted Baseball hall of Famer Carlos Beltrán addressed his involvement in the 2017 Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal, asserting that while it is a part of his career narrative, it does not define him as an individual. Beltrán,elected to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America on Tuesday, received 84.2% of the vote, surpassing the 75% threshold needed for induction.
Beltrán acknowledged the team’s actions during their 2017 World Series-winning season, stating, “Honestly, I know that’s part of my story. There’s no doubt that as a team, we altogether put ourselves in that position.” He reflected on the competitive drive that fueled the team’s actions, noting, “We did take it to a different level, meaning on finding ways to beat the opposing team.”
despite the controversy, Beltrán emphasized that the scandal does not encapsulate his entire career and character. He joins Andruw Jones and Jeff Kent as members of the Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026.
Throughout his 20-year Major League baseball career, Beltrán played for the Kansas City Royals, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, St. louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, and Houston Astros. He finished with a .279 batting average,2,725 hits,435 home runs,1,582 runs, and 312 stolen bases. Beltrán is one of only four players in MLB history to achieve 2,700 hits, 400 home runs, 1,500 runs, and 300 stolen bases, alongside Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, and Alex Rodriguez.
Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Beltrán has dedicated himself to growing the game in his native Puerto Rico, establishing a school that provides developmental and educational opportunities. he expressed his hope that fans visiting the Hall of Fame will gain a complete understanding of baseball’s rich history and the diverse contributions of its players.
“The story of baseball is not about one player,” Beltrán stated. “It’s about multiple players, different nationalities, different backgrounds, understanding were the game began and where the game is today.”
