The massively popular online gaming platform roblox is facing increasing pressure over child safety concerns, prompting the company to announce new age verification measures. While a welcome step, experts warn these changes are not a silver bullet, and a multi-faceted approach – including robust parental involvement - is crucial to safeguarding young users in this evolving digital landscape.

The Risks: From In-Game Interactions to Off-Platform Grooming
The core concern revolves around the ease with which adults can interact with children within Roblox.As Mick Moran, CEO of Hotline.ie, a leading Irish internet safety organization, explains, a key tactic employed by those seeking to harm children is establishing “exclusive access.”
“One of the key elements in grooming, or even sexual abuse, is exclusive access to the child,” Moran stated. “Before abuse can take place, there must be exclusive access.”
The platform’s structure, allowing users to transition from Roblox games to external messaging apps, significantly exacerbates this risk.Moran highlights this as a major ”red flag,” as it facilitates the movement of interactions off Roblox, where moderation is significantly reduced or non-existent. This allows potential predators to build rapport and gather details – a crucial stage in the grooming process.
Chiara Sanchez, a senior researcher at Revealing Reality, a UK-based research group specializing in online safety, corroborates these concerns. Her extensive testing of Roblox revealed a disturbing prevalence of inappropriate behavior. “What we saw was shocking…instantly we saw sexualised behavior… racial slurs, rape jokes, and also what sounded like adults interacting with children.”
Roblox’s Response: Age Verification and Chat Limitations
Responding to mounting criticism and legal challenges, Roblox announced it will implement age verification for chat functionality, rolling out in Ireland in early January. The aim is to ”further limit communication between minors and adults.”
While Moran acknowledges age-gating as a “great idea,” he cautions against complacency.”Will bad actors and properly motivated bad actors be able to get over that barrier? yes, they absolutely will.” He emphasizes that determined individuals will find ways to circumvent these safeguards.
Roblox itself states it has “a robust set of Community Standards” and implements limitations on chat for younger users. These include prohibiting image and video sharing in chat and utilizing filters to block personal information and attempts to direct users off-platform.However, experts argue these measures are insufficient.
Sanchez points out that even with age verification, risks remain as long as adults and children can share the same virtual spaces. “As long as adults and children are able to enter the same space, the same server, and be in that space together, I think risks still remain.”

The consensus among safety experts is clear: technology alone cannot solve this problem. Parental involvement is paramount.
Detective Superintendent Mullen emphasizes the importance of proactive engagement. “The best thing that parents can give children and young people is their attention and get involved in their online life in the same way they would their real life.”

Moran echoes this sentiment,stressing the need for open dialog.”Engage with the parental controls, discuss why you’re putting the parental controls in place, talk about the bad things that can happen to kids online, make sure your kids are equipped with the knowledge and the tools to mind themselves online.”
