A New Chapter for the Commonwealth Games: Saying Farewell to Clyde and Welcoming a New Mascot
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games are on the horizon, and with them comes a changing of the guard. After a decade of representing the spirit of the Games, the beloved mascot Clyde is retiring. This marks the end of an era, but also the exciting anticipation of a new symbol to capture the heart of the event.
Remembering Clyde: A Legacy of Joy and Scottish Pride
Clyde, the thistle mascot, first burst onto the scene for the Glasgow 2014 Games. He quickly became an icon, embodying the warmth and energy of the city. Remarkably, over 50,000 Clyde plush toys were sold during those Games,a testament to his widespread popularity.
However, Clyde’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. He was briefly taken down due to instances of vandalism, highlighting the passionate engagement – and sometimes, misdirected enthusiasm – he inspired. Despite this, he remained a cherished figure, rubbing shoulders with global stars like Usain Bolt and impressing dignitaries like Prince William and Princess Kate.
Clyde joins a distinguished lineage of Games mascots, including Borobi the koala (Gold Coast 2018) and Perry the bull (Birmingham 2022). Each mascot represents the unique character and culture of its host city.
Glasgow Steps Up: A “Scaled-Back” Games with Big Ambitions
Glasgow’s commitment to the Commonwealth Games was reaffirmed last year when it stepped in to host a revised version of the event. This came after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew due to escalating costs. While described as “scaled-back,” the Games promise to deliver the same spirit of competition and camaraderie.
A New Mascot, Crafted by the Next Generation
now, the focus shifts to the future. Glasgow 2026 is preparing to unveil a brand new mascot, and it’s a project deeply rooted in the community. The design was entrusted to the Glasgow 2026 Mascot Makers – a dedicated team of 76 schoolchildren from 24 local schools.
This collaborative approach ensures the new mascot will truly represent the values and aspirations of the city’s youth. Organizers emphasize the new character embodies fun, inclusion, pride, and progress. As phil Batty, chief executive of Glasgow 2026, stated, “Clyde is loved by everybody… He’s given many years of tireless service and will be a tough act to follow.” However, he expressed confidence that the new mascot will “add magic and sparkle” and win over a new generation of fans.
The Big Reveal: what Could It Be?
The anticipation is building. You can mark your calendars for July 23rd – exactly one year before the Games begin – when the new mascot will be revealed to the world.
Speculation is rife. Will it be a majestic unicorn, a playful haggis, or perhaps a whimsical take on the city’s iconic Duke of Wellington statue, complete with its signature traffic cone? Only time will tell.
For now, sporting fans are left to ponder the possibilities and eagerly await the unveiling of Glasgow 2026’s newest ambassador. You won’t want to miss it!
