The reinvention of Counting crows: A Musician’s Viewpoint
The evolution of a band is rarely a straight line. Sometimes, it takes a fresh perspective – a producer who can unlock a sound you didn’t even know was within reach. That’s precisely what happened with Counting Crows and producer T Bone Burnett.
It felt like a complete reinvention, a return to the roots of what inspired us all. We were looking at the foundational sounds of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and The Band. This wasn’t about chasing trends; it was about rediscovering authenticity.
I received a call from Adam, asking me to contribute to the new record.By the time I arrived at the studio, things had already shifted. We were working out of a space in encino, Los Angeles – previously owned by Tito Jackson of the Jackson 5.
Remarkably, the guitars Dylan himself had recently used were still there. It was a tangible connection to musical history, a powerful energy in the room.
T Bone had a very specific vision for my guitar work. He instructed me to play behind the tempo of the drums.His colorful analogy? “If you rush ahead of the drums, you sound like an adolescent jacking off too quickly.”
He’s a Texan, and his advice was wonderfully grounded.He encouraged me to imagine putting my feet up on the mixing board and chewing gum while playing – a complete relaxation of control.
Counting Crows emerged, in manny ways, as a counterpoint to the grunge scene. Kurt Cobain’s tragic death felt like a definitive closing chapter.The prevailing mood was one of self-destruction, a focus on obliteration rather than expansion.
The nihilism had simply gone too far. The pendulum swung back towards something more human, more emotionally resonant. Counting Crows offered a blend of folk, rock, and the soulful influence of Van Morrison.
The song itself remains timeless. Even now,on stage,rocking out with Adam,I’m often struck by the memory of hearing the demo for the first time. it’s a truly incredible feeling.
