Czech Citizen Released from Venezuelan Detention, Returns Home
Caracas, Venezuela & Prague, Czech Republic - January 16, 2026 – A Czech citizen, identified as Darmovzal, has been released from detention in Venezuela and is en route back to the Czech Republic, according to a statement released by Czech Minister of foreign Affairs Macinka on Friday. Darmovzal was initially detained in September 2024 on allegations of involvement in a plot to assassinate Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, though he has not been formally charged with any crime.
The release comes following the recent capture of Maduro by U.S.forces, which led to the establishment of a provisional goverment in Venezuela led by Delcy Rodríguez, a close ally of the former president. RodríguezS governance has initiated the release of numerous political prisoners as a gesture of goodwill and a step towards political reconciliation.
“Today, in the early hours around 4:00 AM our time, he was released with a group of other prisoners from Ireland, Germany, Albania, Ukraine, and the Netherlands,” Minister Macinka stated. A special Czech aircraft has been dispatched to Caracas to transport Darmovzal and the other released individuals back to their respective home countries.
Currently located in caracas, Darmovzal has already made contact with his family, confirming his well-being.Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has also confirmed that Darmovzal is in good health. Minister Macinka further indicated that the Czech Republic is prepared to resume diplomatic relations with Venezuela following this positive growth.
