mcelroy Finds Optimism Amidst Challenging Conditions in Netherlands
David McElroy delivered a promising opening round of 66 at the Dutch open, signaling a potential turning point in his season. He’s currently navigating a challenging stretch on the Road to Mallorca, having missed the cut in his last three events. However, a strong start in the Netherlands has ignited a renewed sense of optimism for the Irishman. The day presented golfers with tricky conditions, particularly noticeable crosswinds and gusty air currents. It proved difficult to accurately gauge wind direction, impacting club selection, especially on approach shots.
“it was hard to tell if it was slightly into or slightly down, which caught me out a couple of times, especially with the wedge shots,” McElroy explained.
Currently 94th in the Rankings with six events remaining before the Rolex Grand Final, a strong performance this week is crucial for his progression. He understands the importance of capitalizing on opportunities in these final stages of the season.
“A good week here would be huge,” he added, acknowledging the stakes.
McElroy feels he’s on the cusp of a breakthrough, despite a largely frustrating year. He’s dedicated meaningful time to practice and is pleased with the improvements he’s seeing in his game.
“To be honest, I’ve played terrible all year barring one good result,” he admitted. “I’ve been practicing realy hard all season, and I’m really pleased with how I am starting to hit the ball.”
He felt his all-around game was solid during the first round. he drove the ball effectively, his iron play was precise, and he successfully navigated the greens, minimizing mistakes.
“I think I did everything well out there today. I drove the ball well and my iron play was good. I only missed a couple of greens and managed to get up and down.”
