Hayter Edges Out Rogers for Stage Win at the ZLM Tour
The ZLM Tour kicked off with a thrilling individual time trial held in the expansive Zuiderpark of The Hague, delivering a nail-biting finish and a surprising victor. The stage showcased a dynamic battle against the clock, with lead changes and incredibly tight margins separating the contenders.
Nils Eekhoff of Picnic-PostNL was among the early starters, setting a benchmark time of 4:32.1. However, his time in the hot seat proved brief. Cameron Rogers of Lidl-Trek swiftly eclipsed his effort, posting a faster time of 4:26.93 - a five-second improvement.
Rogers, a rider who previously stunned the cycling world with a prologue victory at the Tour of Austria, appeared poised for a significant result. He endured a tense wait as established time trialists like christophe Laporte (Visma-Lease a Bike) and under-23 world champion Jakob Søderqvist (Lidl-Trek) attempted to dethrone him.
Søderqvist came remarkably close, finishing just three-tenths of a second behind Rogers. This underscored the challenging course and the competitive field assembled for the ZLM Tour. As the final ten riders began their efforts, Rogers’ lead remained intact, fueling his hopes for a stage win.
the biggest threat emerged in the form of Ethan Hayter, the British champion and a specialist in track cycling and pursuit events. Hayter, known for his explosive power, delivered a blistering ride.
Ultimately, Hayter’s effort proved just enough, surpassing Rogers by a mere 28 hundredths of a second. the narrow margin left Rogers visibly disappointed, but the competition remained fierce. Johan price Pejtersen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Danny van Poppel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) followed, but neither could challenge Hayter’s winning time.
