For over four decades, he’s been a pioneer in STD research and prevention. He received the American STD Association’s Distinguished Career Award in 2010, recognizing his lifetime of expertise. Dr. Handsfield also served a six-year term on ASHA’s Board of Directors.

Dr. Hook is the medical director of the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Control Program for the Jefferson County Health Department in Birmingham, Alabama. He’s also a professor of medicine/epidemiology at the University of Alabama at birmingham. Moreover, Dr. Hook co-directs the UAB Center for Social Medicine and STDs,demonstrating his commitment to both clinical care and research.
