Devastating Loss for humanitarian Workers in Gaza: Oxfam Partner Targeted
The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with a recent tragedy highlighting the immense risks faced by those dedicated to providing aid. A deeply shocking event has unfolded, resulting in the loss of a dedicated humanitarian worker and her children. This incident underscores the urgent need for accountability and protection of aid workers operating in conflict zones.
A Family Lost to Violence
tasneem, a 27-year-old psychologist working with Juzoor for Health and Community Development – a partner organization – was tragically killed alongside her two young children, Sham (5) and Suleiman (3), during an Israeli airstrike on September 20th. Sadly, Tasneem was also expecting another child, and had previously experienced the heartbreaking loss of a son, Muslam, in a prior bombing last year. Her husband remains critically injured following the attack.
It’s difficult to fathom the scale of this loss, and the ripple effect it will have on the community she served. Tasneem’s dedication was unwavering, even in the face of constant danger.
A Courageous Humanitarian
Those who knew tasneem remember her as a remarkably courageous and devoted individual. Dr. Umiayeh Khammash, director of juzoor, eloquently stated that she “continued to serve those who desperately needed it until the very end.” This speaks volumes about her character and commitment to helping others.
You can imagine the profound impact she had on the lives of those she touched, offering vital psychological support in a region desperately needing it.
Escalating Attacks on Aid Infrastructure
This tragedy isn’t isolated. Over the past three days, two additional partner organizations have suffered notable damage due to Israeli attacks.
* Al Ataa, an association empowering women and protecting vulnerable groups, had its facilities destroyed.
* A clinic operated by the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS) was also leveled.
In total, ten PMRS facilities have been demolished – nine in northern Gaza and one in Khan Younès. This systematic destruction of medical and humanitarian infrastructure severely hinders the ability to provide essential care.
The Urgent Need for Accountability
Thes attacks raise serious concerns about the safety of humanitarian workers and the protection of vital aid operations. It’s unacceptable that those striving to alleviate suffering are themselves becoming targets.
Consider this: nearly 1,600 aid and health workers have reportedly been killed as the start of the conflict. This demands immediate attention and accountability. It’s crucial that all parties adhere to international humanitarian law and ensure the safety of those working to save lives.
You deserve to know that efforts are being made to protect those on the ground, and to hold those responsible for these devastating losses accountable. The future of humanitarian aid in Gaza hangs in the balance, and a commitment to protecting those who provide it is paramount.
