Google Assistant Voices Get a Botanical Refresh & Hint at a Gemini Takeover
Google is subtly evolving the voice options available for its Assistant, signaling a broader shift as Gemini prepares to take center stage. Recent updates showcase refined voice names and a slight tweak to one description, all while the tech giant prepares for significant improvements to its smart home and device control capabilities.
A blooming New Roster of Voices
The Assistant’s voice options, previously themed around plants, have received a refresh. Six of the ten voices have been renamed, aiming for greater familiarity and positive associations. Here’s a look at the updated lineup:
Rose – British accent • Higher voice
Lily – American accent • Mid-range voice
Aster – American accent • Higher voice
Magnolia – American accent • Mid-range voice
Violet – British accent • Mid-range voice
Pothos – Engaging • Mid-range voice
Calathea - Australian Accent • higher voice
Yarrow – Warm • Deeper voice
Croton - Smooth • Deeper voice
Amaryllis – Shining • Higher voice
The change from “Ivy” to “Violet” is a prime example of this refinement. While botanically related, “Violet” carries a more universally appealing connotation than the perhaps negative association with “Ivy” (due to its toxicity). Similarly, “Magnolia” is arguably more recognizable than “Verbena” for the average user.
Interestingly, the update also includes a minor description change. “Fern” now offers a “Warm” voice, previously described as “Bright.” You can listen to both the original and updated voice sets to discern the difference for yourself.

What Does This Mean for Google Assistant?
These voice updates arrive alongside growing anticipation for a major overhaul of Google’s smart assistant technology. Google previously announced “major improvements” are on the horizon, largely driven by the integration of Gemini. It appears the “Google Assistant” branding itself may be phased out. Initially, there was speculation that the Assistant brand would remain for Home devices, but recent developments – including ”Gemini” coming to Google TV - suggest a complete transition. This move signifies a basic shift from a task-based assistant to a more powerful, AI-driven experience.
The rollout of these upgrades is expected this fall, following a period of public testing that began last year. You can expect a more conversational, intuitive, and capable experience across your Google devices.
Looking Ahead: Gemini and the Future of Smart Assistance
The move to Gemini represents a significant leap forward. Leveraging a large language model (LLM) allows for a more natural and nuanced interaction with your devices. Gemini’s capabilities extend beyond simple commands, enabling it to understand context, anticipate your needs, and provide more helpful responses.
This isn’t just about a new voice; it’s about a fundamentally different way of interacting with technology. You’ll likely see Gemini integrated across a wider range of Google products and services, offering a seamless and intelligent experience wherever you go.
Keep an eye out for further updates as Google continues to refine and expand the capabilities of Gemini, shaping the future of smart assistance.
