“Mothernet“: pioneering Sci-Fi Production in Singapore with Virtual Production Technology
A groundbreaking science fiction film, Mothernet, is set to premiere at the Busan international Film Festival on September 22nd.This project isn’t just notable for its compelling narrative; it’s a landmark achievement in utilizing cutting-edge virtual production techniques, specifically within Singapore’s burgeoning film industry.
A Collaborative Vision Takes Shape
The film’s genesis lies with independant producer Lau, a veteran of SK Global and Jet Tone Films. Recognizing the potential of virtual production,Lau connected the creative team with Refinery Media,a leading virtual production facility based in Singapore. This collaboration proved pivotal, and Lau subsequently joined the project as a co-producer.
Notably, Mothernet is the first film to receive funding from Singapore’s Infocomm Media Advancement Authority’s (IMDA) new Virtual Production Innovation Fund. This support underscores the nation’s commitment to fostering innovation in filmmaking.
Adapting to a Rapidly Evolving Technological Landscape
Director Shanty and writer Noyer initially began developing Mothernet before the widespread adoption of technologies like ChatGPT. However, they quickly realized the story needed to reflect the present, not a distant future.
“We initially planned to set the film in 2035,” Shanty explains, “but the rise of AI demanded a near-future setting.” She believes portraying this reality now amplifies the story’s impact, making it more relatable and thought-provoking for audiences.
Exploring Human Connection in the Age of AI
Mothernet delves into the complex relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence. Co-writer Gina observes that the isolation experienced during the pandemic forced a reevaluation of what genuine connection means.
Today, peopel increasingly turn to AI for companionship amidst global crises. Yet, Gina emphasizes, “What we truly crave extends beyond bright machines; it’s the presence and empathy of other humans.”
Mothernet reflects this basic human longing. The film posits that even in the face of adversity, humanity thrives through mutual support. Machines can process data, but only humans can offer understanding and solace.
A Team of Award-Winning Talent
The creative team behind Mothernet boasts impressive credentials. Gina’s previous work includes acclaimed screenplays like Dua Garis biru, Keluarga Cemara, and Like & Share (winner of Best Picture at the Osaka asian Film Festival).
Director Ho is also a celebrated filmmaker, known for Cities Of Last Things (Platform Prize,Toronto International Film Festival),Pinoy Sunday (Best New Director,Golden Horse Awards),and Terrorizers.
The cast features prominent Indonesian actors: Dian (known for Aruna & Her Palate and the Netflix series Cigarette Girl), Ringo (Best Actor at the Indonesian Oscars for Falling In Love Like Movies), and Ali (24 Hours With Gaspar).
Virtual Production in Singapore: A Growing Hub
The decision to utilize a virtual production stage in Singapore highlights the country’s growing capabilities in this area. Virtual production offers filmmakers unprecedented creative control and efficiency.
Here’s how virtual production benefits projects like Mothernet:
* Real-time Visualization: Directors can see changes to sets and lighting instantly.
