A Weekend Trip Turns Tragic

Both young men had recently earned their degrees from Florida A&M University and were in houston to attend the annual Texas Greek Picnic. they were proud members of the ​Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, ‍a brotherhood now mourning a profound loss.

Friends remember⁢ them as vibrant, unique individuals with bright ‍futures. “I’m glad‌ to ⁢have called them my brothers,” shared a fraternity brother,Zachary Sewell. “They were truly unique individuals, unlike anyone else.”

The Crash and the Pursuit

Investigators report the crash occurred around 2 a.m.​ Saturday when‌ a driver allegedly ran‍ a red ⁣light, colliding with the SUV occupied by the two graduates. This impact caused their vehicle to strike a building, resulting in a fire.

prior to the⁢ fatal crash,‍ a⁢ Precinct 7 deputy constable initiated a pursuit of the suspect, 21-year-old Rene Hernandez.​ Hernandez was initially observed allegedly hitting another vehicle and then running multiple red lights.

constable James “Smokie” Phillips stated the deputy activated emergency signals and followed proper protocols during the pursuit. “When she saw it, she activated her emergency equipment and pursued the truck with ⁤her visual and audio⁤ signals,” Phillips‌ explained.

Facing the Consequences

Hernandez now faces ⁣two counts of murder. Authorities allege he was already committing⁣ a felony – evading law enforcement – when the crash occurred. He sustained injuries in the collision and remains hospitalized. He will be transferred to the Harris County Jail ⁢as soon as his condition allows.

A female​ passenger​ in Hernandez’s truck also suffered injuries, but they are not considered life-threatening.
