Jodie Foster Credits Early Success with Shielding Her From Hollywood Abuse
Jodie Foster has revealed in a recent NPR interview that her early rise to prominence and subsequent power within the film industry likely protected her from experiencing the widespread sexual abuse that has plagued many young actors in Hollywood. The two-time Oscar winner attributes her relative safety to achieving a level of influence – sparked by her 1976 Oscar nomination for Taxi Driver at the age of 12 - that made her “too perilous to touch.”
Foster acknowledged experiencing “microaggressions,” common experiences of sexism in the workplace, but believes her early success positioned her in a different category, granting her a degree of protection unavailable to many of her peers. She posited that the potential repercussions of targeting someone who could “ruin people’s careers or…call ‘Uncle'” served as a deterrent.
the actress also highlighted the role of her personality, describing herself as someone who approaches the world “head-first” and is tough to emotionally manipulate. She explained that predators frequently enough exploit vulnerability, targeting those with less power and emotional resilience.
Foster’s experiences resonate with those of other actresses, including Natalie Portman, who has spoken about being sexualized as a child actor. Portman revealed in a “Smartless” podcast interview that Foster reached out to her after hearing her discuss these experiences, offering support and continuing to serve as a role model. Portman similarly employed a strategy of projecting seriousness to deter unwanted attention, aided by her mother’s constant presence on set.
The interview underscores the pervasive issue of power dynamics within Hollywood and the importance of agency and support systems in safeguarding young performers.
