Los Angeles, CA – December 11, 2023 - Following a horrific antisemitic attack in Sydney, Australia, that left at least 11 peopel dead during a Hanukkah festivity at Bondi Beach, Los Angeles County and City officials are bolstering security measures and expressing unwavering solidarity with the Jewish community both locally and abroad. LAPD increases Patrols & Situational Awareness
The Los Angeles Police department (LAPD) is actively assessing potential threats to Los Angeles County and has implemented increased patrol checks at critical facilities. This proactive measure, announced Sunday, aims to deter potential incidents and ensure a swift response should any threat materialize.
“We are actively assessing any potential threats to Los Angeles county and have increased patrol checks at critical facilities,” stated the LAPD in a public statement. “All patrol personnel will be briefed to ensure heightened situational awareness and continued vigilance. In addition, we will be reaching out to our faith-based partners and community leaders to encourage the public to promptly report any suspicious activity. Violence has no place in our society. We remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting our communities and ensuring public safety throughout Los Angeles County.”
The Beverly Hills Police Department has similarly announced increased security around the city’s Jewish institutions, with enhanced patrols scheduled to continue through December 23rd.

Authorities have identified two suspects, one of whom was killed at the scene and the other currently hospitalized in critical condition. Los Angeles Mayor Karen bass issued a strong condemnation of the attack, stating, “The mass murder in Sydney today is yet another horrific antisemitic act of terror on the Jewish community. This senseless attack on Australian Jews who had gathered on Bondi Beach to celebrate the first day of Hanukkah and the miracle of lights is a devastating reminder that antisemitism continues to rise around the world. I strongly condemn antisemitism in all its forms.”
Mayor Bass emphasized Los angeles’s support for the Jewish community, stating, “Los Angeles holds the Jewish community in Australia and here at home in our hearts. We have reached out to the Australian Consul General in Los Angeles with our deepest condolences and support. The LAPD has already increased patrols near places of worship and in communities tonight, during the first night of Hanukkah and throughout the holiday.”

the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles echoed the condemnation, calling the attack a “deliberate terrorist act targeting the jewish community” and emphasizing the organization’s commitment to security. “The security of the Jewish community is the top priority of #JewishFederations across North America,” the Federation stated. “All Federations and their community security initiatives are on full alert for the Chanukah celebrations in their communities, working with all our law enforcement partners.” The Federation affirmed its resolve to continue Jewish traditions and enhance community safety.
Developer Rick Caruso, a prominent figure in Los Angeles politics, also offered a statement of support, referencing the words of Rabbi Lchaim Zushe: “We are filled with an even greater resolve to bring light, comfort, and strength to our community. Broad Condemnation & Acts of Courage
The condemnation extended beyond political and Jewish community leaders. The Muslim Public Affairs Council also issued a statement, ”in the strongest possible terms,” condemning the attack and expressing solidarity with the Jewish community.
Former President Donald Trump also condemned the attack, and notably praised the bravery of Ahmed Al Ahmed, a 43-year-old Muslim bystander who reportedly disarmed one of the gunmen, possibly saving lives. “Very, very brave person, who went and frontally attacked one of the shooters and saved a lot of lives,” Trump stated.
