A recently filed ⁤lawsuit alleges that immigration detainees at⁤ the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in San Bernardino County‌ are facing deplorable conditions,including mold,contagious diseases,inadequate medical care,and‍ a lack of basic ‍necessities like clean water and food. The suit, brought forth by immigrant rights groups and attorneys, ⁢claims these‍ conditions are ​a‌ deliberate tactic to coerce detainees​ into ⁤relinquishing their legal claims.

The complaint⁣ details a rapid increase in the facility’s population-from just three individuals to almost 2,000 in the past year-which has exacerbated existing issues and led to overcrowding.​ Attorneys argue that these abuses are ‍part of a larger effort to harass, intimidate, and deport immigrants.

Since ​october, two detainees have died at‌ Adelanto, fueling concerns about deteriorating conditions. families of the deceased report being kept uninformed about their loved ones’ health and allege ​a systemic lack of ⁣medical attention.One case ⁢involved a man exhibiting ⁢symptoms of alcohol withdrawal who died shortly after ⁣being briefly held ​at the​ center.

Detainees who have been released⁢ from Adelanto corroborate these claims, describing a prison-like habitat with limited food, a lack of hygiene products, and the⁤ spread of illness ⁢without medical‌ intervention.

This lawsuit is the second in California to allege inhumane conditions at an immigration detention center.​ A similar case‍ filed in November alleges comparable issues at the California City Detention Facility. Nationally, ​more than a dozen people died in ICE custody last year.

Attorneys involved in the case are seeking⁣ to compel federal agencies to adhere to their own detention standards and⁣ to declare the conditions at Adelanto a violation of​ detainees’ Fifth Amendment rights. Officials at the Department ‍of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Geo Group, the private company operating the facility, have ⁢not yet responded to requests for comment.
