Chris Eubank Jr. Fight a “Bit of an Idiot Move,” Admits Former Champion Chris Williams – Now Focused on a Measured Return
Chris williams, a decorated former boxing champion, has openly discussed the health risks he faced leading up to and during his recent fight against Chris Eubank Jr., revealing a history of concussions and a dangerous weight cut. His candid assessment offers a stark look at the realities of the sport and his steadfast path toward a healthier, more strategic comeback.
A History of Head Trauma
Williams revealed he endured multiple concussions before hanging up his gloves initially, including a particularly alarming incident just three weeks before stepping into the ring with Eubank Jr. He was floored four times during that sparring session.
“If you go and have another concussion, you can drop dead,” Williams stated frankly. He acknowledged fighting Eubank Jr. was a risky decision, driven by the inherent fighter’s mentality of believing he could still compete.
The Perils of a Brutal weight Cut
Beyond the head trauma, Williams detailed the extreme measures he took to make weight for the middleweight bout. He lost a important amount of weight – nearly a stone – in the final 12 to 18 hours before the weigh-in.
This rapid dehydration took a severe toll. ”I was losing too much weight,” he explained. “That last week…it’s a big ask to recover from that.” He even confessed to feeling physically unstable on the scales, fearing he would collapse.
Addressing CTE Concerns & Current Health
Despite the past risks, Williams is now prioritizing his long-term health. He openly discussed his concerns about Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), particularly given his responsibilities as a father.
“It always has been because I have got children wich I have to think about,” he said. While the worry was more acute two years ago, Williams feels considerably healthier now. He’s undergone numerous brain scans, all of which have come back clear.
A Renewed Focus & Rebuilt Confidence
Williams emphasized a positive shift in his mental and physical state. He’s regained the trust of his coach after four months of dedicated training and feels more prepared then ever.
“We’ve had a couple of chats, he says ‘I’m happy, you are looking good’,” Williams shared. He’s currently poised to announce his next fight.
Looking Ahead: A Measured Comeback
Williams is initially targeting a return at super-middleweight,adding eight pounds to his frame for a “safe option.” While he doesn’t rule out another run at middleweight, his priority is a enduring and healthy approach.
He’s clear about his ambitions.”I’ve come back for the same reason I was in boxing before,” he stated. “Winning a world title would be the one.” However, he’s also realistic, acknowledging the challenges ahead.
A Fight-by-Fight Approach
Williams isn’t planning a lengthy comeback. He intends to evaluate his progress after each fight.
* If things are going well, he’ll continue.
* If not, he’ll reassess his future in the sport.
Ultimately, Williams believes he has much left to offer. “I have got a lot more to give and I know I can prove a lot of people wrong,” he concluded, signaling a determined and thoughtful return to the ring. He’s focused on taking the biggest fights possible, proving his resilience, and leaving a lasting legacy on his own terms.
